I always have a problem figuring out the year etc of Browning a5 shotguns. Be an Auto 5, 12 Gauge Magnum, made in 1976, with serial number 1001. In 1958, the 20 gauge was added to the line; 20 gauge magnums.

I recently inherited what appears to be a Browning A5 from my father. I know very little about it or shotguns in general so I am hoping to find some help identifying this shotgun. I've documented all of the symbols and numbers I can find on it and taken pictures. From what I can tell the various pieces point to 1920s to early 1930s. This was JM Browning's auto shotgun that Winchester wouldn't make, so he took it to Belgium and FN produced it.

If I recall, the serial numbers don't match and I believe I saw a picture of a cracked part in your pictures. I'd say you're looking at about $300 (I just picked up a 16 gauge made in 1925 for $400 in much better shape). Mine has serial # 75009 - Mfg yr 1929 Looking to replace the fore arm, if you know of one available. Attached is a mfg. Year chart that will help. It contains data for all gages ad has additional info re mfg. I have 1 that has 18554 on the receiver right where the shells go into the tube. It also has a 9v on it stamped above the 18554. You can barely see the 9v in the pic I attached.

It is a Belgium A5 magnum 12 Ga and takes 2 & 3/4 or 3 inch shells and has 31 inch barrel. Also says 'special steel' on right side of barrel, has a vent rib and the recoil pad is this soft rubber type material. The recoil pad makes me think it was after ww2 but could also have been added on after purchase I suppose. I was told it is 1959.
