Initially envisioned as a solo project by lead singer and songwriter Balance (born Geoffrey Burton) while he was in the band, Coil evolved into a full-time project with the addition of, a former member of pioneering group who became Balance's creative and personal partner. In 1985, the group began working on a series of soundtracks, among them music for the first movie based on the novel by their acquaintance at that time,, although they were rejected.
